What is the

Surrey Performing Arts Library ?

With nearly a mile of shelving space, the Surrey Performing Arts Library (SPAL) has one of the three largest collections of Performing Arts loan material in the UK.

Recently relocated by Surrey County Council to their library premises at Bourne Hall, Ewell, this substantial collection spans Music, Drama, Film and Dance, and includes:

  ♥  3,250 playsets    ♥  2,200 choral sets    ♥  1,030 orchestral sets

♥  Film & Dance resources   ♥  individual reference books and scripts

SPAL’s collection of music, drama, film and dance resources is available to individuals and groups in Surrey and the neighbouring counties and boroughs, but also throughout the UK via the Inter-Library Loans system.

SPAL is still currently run by Surrey County Council (SCC).

The SPAL catalogue remains visible online, but when choosing the branch, it's no longer called SPAL, look instead for:

  • Scores - The scores collection suits the needs of instrumentalists and singers of all standards and includes extensive collections of full, miniature and study scores for quartets, concert bands, chamber and symphony orchestras, and choirs and singing groups of a range of sizes and abilities.
  • Plays - The play collection covers the standards, modern plays, monologues, plays for children, plus older and rarer plays, with a good selection of foreign playscripts.
  • Books - The book collection provides in-depth material covering all aspects of music, dance, theatre and cinema.
  • Audio-visual - The extensive collection of CDs and DVDs covers music, dance, theatre, cinema, sound effects and tutorials.

Making Music Kirby Collection

The Making Music Kirby Collection was launched in August 2011 thanks to a generous legacy from Alan Kirby, Making Music's first Chairman.

He was a leading figure in choral singing in Surrey and, together with his wife Ethel, was keen to ensure the continued success of choral singing in Surrey. The Kirby Collection remains with the overall collection at Ewell.

The future

For more than a decade the collection was available to the public at a stand-alone library at Denbies Wine Estate, near Dorking.

SCC moved the library to Ewell in August 2018 but without its specialist staff and their knowledge - that essential added value they bring to the library.

NewSPAL are planning an exciting new future for the collection in premises more central to the County's population, and with online access not just to peruse the catalogue, but to book loans and pay for them, sure in the knowledge that they are available for the period you require.
